Gallery of Popular Landmarks Showcased in 8-bit Google Maps

Google Maps’ April Fools prank is a stunning 8 pixel world emulating the Nintendo Entertainment System with Dragon Warrior style maps. The Google Maps team joked “8-bit Quest Maps is our Beta Maps technology and has certain system requirements. Your system may not meet the minimum requirements for 8-bit computations”.

A screenshot gallery of some of the popular landmarks recreated in 8-bit glory is located below:

Tatsuo Nomura, Software Engineer at Google Maps, wrote on the Google Maps blog that “we realized that we may have left behind a large number of users who couldn’t access Google Maps on their classic hardware. Surprisingly, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was unsupported, despite its tremendous popularity with over 60 million units sold worldwide”. The Google Maps team worked with support from Nintendo and Square Enix to create the maps.

Here’s a fun video from the Google Japan team explaining the new feature:

There is an odd monster south-west of las vegas, near Sandy Valley. I don’t know what it is though.

    1. The Google team left characters from the game “Dragon Quest” around the map. An image of the character is at this website: if you’re interested in the other details.

  12. The Angel of the North in the UK and also Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

And fyi, the Southwark Bridge in London is called “Tower Bridge”.

Still, excellent compilation of them here ;D

    1. Thanks, Tower Bridge is a much more recognizable name, I also put up the Burj Al Arab (already had the Burj Khalifa) and the Angel of North. Thanks for visiting!
